Getting ready for an Olympic distance tri after a year off

Hi,

I'm new to this group, but am hoping I can get some motivation and direction.  I was an avid triathlete for the past several years but got side-tracked from training for the past nine months... blame it on my job, my commute, or my newborn son, at the end of the day I know its just excuses and I should be making time.

Well it's May, and my twin brother wants me to compete in the New Jersey State Triathlon (olympic distance) at the end of July.  Its got me motivated to at least compete this year, but I haven't trained seriously all winter/spring.

I have a decent base already, so my question is should I just focus on shorter, high intensity training sessions or should I use the first couple of weeks to build my base again?

Thanks

Hi Power Bar,

Little confused by couple of things you've said - "I have a decent base already"...."should I use the first couple of weeks to build my base again".

I'm going to assume you have a decent base, which in this case, I'd define as being able to complete the individual distances fairly comfortably. Based on this, I'd recommend focussing on a) some intensity/speeed sessions and b) some brick sessions - swim/bike and bike/run - so you can get used to that feeling again and beat your twin!

Best wishes
PB Tri Ed.
