sports science, research, training and performance

Hi all,

I'ts the first time in several years I've been back running - building back to 10k at the moment. As I'm now older (43) I'm finding I need a day to recover from each run session, with stiffness/sore legs lasting the day following each run session. Means I'm limited to a max 3 run sessions a week.

I'm still able to cycle and swim as frequently as I've always done, though clearly these are less stressful on joints etc...

Any thoughts/tips on alleviating?

Cheers

JULIAN

Hi Julian,
I'm the same age and was never a runner in my younger days. See my comment in http://www.beatyourpb.com/forum/topics/tight-hamstrings. With good stretching my legs never hurt now. It's very boring but I can see the benefits.

Hi Patrick - Thanks for the reply - I can see you're putting a lot more time into strtching than myself!

I guess my hamstrings are in part prone to tightness due to my cycling background and I know I must stretch more. Interestingly, I recently changed shoes to Asics Gel 15's and this has also helped alleviate post-run stiffness. That said, I've got a feeling that if i can stretch them out more it would also help lengthen my stride, aiding speed too. No excuses I guess, just down to investing in stretching time...
