OK as I'm already working out a cunning plan to ensure 2012 is a brilliant year, could you knowledgeable and lovable folks help me out.

I'm slow, 3hours 28min for my first (and so far only) Olympic tri. And I know that on swim and run pace I'm way better than this, which suggests a big bike focus next year.

So (here's the question) if I can only afford one piece of tech kit to help would I be better with a bike computer or a heart rate monitor? Thanks for your assistance!

hey Kevin,

have a look at this computer. i wish i had got one http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=59831

everything you need, i use both heart rate and computer so worth having them and this is a cheap option for both ,

I guess I'll have to see how good Santa thinks I have been, but does look an excellent option. Looks normal enough that the wife might not realise what I've done and I could always point out the savings over seperates ;-)

Kevin, I think a key thing for you is to first decide whether your main 2012 focus is cycling or triathlons.

Cycling

I'm not a cateye expert, but at a quick glance, one downside with this model would seem to be you can't download the data into training logs like the ones here (eg polar activity) or onto your pc for analysis.

For £14 more you could get a Garmin Edge 200 (no HRM) which does have download functionality. If you can push the boat out then the Garmin Edge 500 (£224)  does have HRM too.

Triathlon

If you are doing triathlons and not just cycling, then something like this would probably be more suitable as you can use for cycling + runs and swimming: Garmin Forerunner 310 or Polar's new GPS or Timex GPS Global Trainer

I totally believe in using data to underpin my training and performance analysis so it's money well spent in getting the right device and they should last for years! Although I've been a Polar user for years, my own personal beleif is that Garmin now lead the way.

Cheers

JULIAN
