Three Advanced Techniques for Roadies

Got your basic riding techniques well in hand? Now learn three advanced moves that come in handy and raise your skills to a new level.

1. Ride No-Hands
Pro cyclists can ride no-hands in the middle of the pack on a twisty descent. Don’t try it! Sometimes, however, you’ll need two hands free to peel an energy bar or peel off a vest. Here’s how:

High cadence pedalling isn’t for everybody

Broadly speaking, higher cadences are fuelled by the aerobic system, where glycogen and fat are oxidised (burned) to power the slow and intermediate fibres of the muscles. Recovery strategy

Start with the three R’s: re-hydration, replenishment and repair. Re-hydration comes first because a dehydrated cell won’t be able to transport the nutrients for replenishment and repair. If you’ve been drinking a sugary sports drink all day, opt for water.

Finally, move onto t… Continue

Stay motivated

It is easy to lose momentum in the winter months. Cold, wet and dark conditions make it harder to get going and easier to find excuses. Even the most dedicated of riders can lack enthusiasm during a lengthy block of training with no immediate race or goal in sight.

5 tips to stay motivated:

Take a training “mini-break”
Feeling down or lethargic isn’t necessarily a sign of a decrease in motivation. but could be a sign that you need a rest. A couple of days off training will not only bene… Continue

Keep your knees healthy

Knee problems are a close second to backache when it comes to cyclists’ aches and pains. Follow the tips below to keep your knees healthy:

Cleat alignment
Everyone’s cycling position is unique, so online or training manual advice is an exact science. Consult a coach, cycling-knowledgeable podiatrist or bike shop that uses professional cleat alignment tools.

Saddle height
Another tricky one to gauge, but absolutely crucial. The old school method of placing your heel on the pedal w… Continue
