High heart rate?

While running hard (but not killing myself), I can get my heart rate to it's theoretical max (178) for my age (43). Once on a hot summers day my monitor showed 181 at the end of a hard run. But I…Continue

"Barefoot" runners out there?

Does anyone have any first hand experiences of running using "barefoot shoes" like Vibram Five Fingers or Feelmax?   I'm curious to try them out but where I live cannot buy these products.

These originate in Hungary where I live and swim. Locally they are known as the "Turtle". It seems their brandname is StrokeStar: …Continue

"I have run in my five fingers shoes. It takes some getting used to. Your calves will be sore so you have to limit your runs to give them time to recover."

"Yeah, me too - just don't get compression tops/sleeves - can understand more their use in upper body/contact sports like rugby. Do feel the tights have helped with recovery/alleviating soreness. Noticed a number of people wearing the socks…"

"80miles a week for 5/10km race distances - not surprising they said you were training too much / too slow. More importantly, 1 year on, have you made changes and seen results?"

Patrick replied to Patrick's discussion The Turtle!
"We use them almost every session, usually in one of the early sets. Because they slow you down I feel they promote good body alignment in the water (and stroke of course). Personally I don't like to push too hard when I'm wearing them - I…"

King of the mountains replied to Patrick's discussion The Turtle!
"Not seen these before. From their shape, looks like they're designed to smooth the flow of water over the paddle/hand, encouraging you to maximise the surface area of the hand, which is a good thing. Have you tried them Patrick - how do they…"

Patrick replied to Julian Downing's discussion Stiffness with age
"Hi Julian, I'm the same age and was never a runner in my younger days. See my comment in http://www.beatyourpb.com/forum/topics/tight-hamstrings. With good stretching my legs never hurt now. It's very boring but I can see the benefits."

Patrick replied to Sonic's discussion Tight hamstrings
"Most runners don't stretch near enough and long term it will tell with injuries. Most runners I see do a few stretches for 20 or 30 seconds each. It is not enough. Due to tight leg muscles, my physio gave me a set of stretches. These are hard.…"
