Gentle ride into work and 2 hours tempo riding on the way home. Pancakes and Nutella for tea. Not too sure if that was part of the training plan but tasted good. Legs hurt from the weekend. Feel like I am missing top end speed.

Poor ride today didn't feel it, still faster than last year,

Rest day today, racing tomorrow, I hope that the weather is this good! This weeks been loads of tempo riding on the road, been enjoying the spring sunshine, and a turbo session with long intervals at threshold.

Saw your comment about not feeling your "top end speed" is there. What works for me early season is to ride a couple of the club 10mile TT's as a 2 up training session with a training partner of mine who is 10-20% quicker than me when he rides solo - find he pushes me up to the next level (of pain threshold!) and I end up just hanging onto his wheel!

Early days yet! Going faster than last year's a good sign, esp if you didn't feel great.

Sounds like a good start to the season. I'm a wimp i'm afraid - waiting for a bit more warmth before debuting on 28th March!

It was -5 as I drove to course, probably reached -1 or 2 by the start, clear blue skies and a hardly any wind, but soooo cold, skin suits weren't designed for winter riding. OK result felt fairly strong and finished with the feeling of more to come, somewhere in the top third of the field. Happy for my first of the season. Average speed just over 22 mph which given the amount of climbing is OK.

I'm with you - addicted to chasing PB's! Fitting in 3 sports isnt as hard as many people think though it does require good planning- If I was just cycling I'd be doing 4 cycling sessions and 1-2 weights sessions for good measure. Clearly training for Tri, I have to reduce the number of bike sessions (3 per week) - the good news which makes it all possible is that cross training helps each discipline. I find swimming in particular really helps raise the cardio ante in cycling and running.

Its a bit unknown territory, longer than I've raced before but I reckon if I keep pushing the gym weights and hill repeats, and start upping intensity on the turbo I should be able to have a good crack at it. I think after that I'll pick my races and may even have a recovery month around June time. Maybe chase some PB's in the local events. Actually lets be honest I know I won't race unless I'm after a PB and then shift the training to road racing for the back half of the season.
3 months is a long time to hold a peak for, good luck with the running, I only just find time for cycle training don't know how you fit in 3 sports!

The Circuit of the Dales looks like a challenging first target race! My speeds picking up nicely now so should be ready for the local district 10's and 25's starting in March which will lead me into the Tri peaks I've got in May/June/July. This month, starting to slot in a few 5/10k running races too. I've always fancied trying a road race - but never quite found the time to fit it in!

Hi Andy

Interesting - like the sound of your pyramid turbo session - what are your target race/distances this year and when are the big peaks?

I'm working a greater % of total training time at a higher intensity already, I guess because I'm aiming to start racing earlier than I usually do (March) with a few hardrider TT's and focussing the summer on short distance TT's and Tri's (10 and 25 miles) so speed's my real interest over endurance (yep, PB chasing again!). My first big tri peak is Windsor Tri, 13th June...

Keep us posted on how you're going!

Cheers

Hi Julian,
Most of the rides at the moment are low intensity keeping the HR down sub 75% creeping to 85% on the hills, trying to stay seated and keep the gear going. Mentally tough rather than physically. On longer rides I am now bringing in 20 minutes at below threshold and then 20 minutes easy recovery for 3 rotations.

Intervals on the turbo are, after a warm up, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 minutes with around 3 mins recovery between at on/just below threshold.

The other turbo session is 50 minutes at tempo pace (75-80%) 2 minutes rest then 2 lots of 5 minute intervals at (90-95%) with 2 minutes between.

Seems to be working building speed and strength. I'll let you know how it goes.

Cheers Andy
